Picking The Right Ball

Ever wonder how to pick out the perfect ball? Do you go by color, or do you just pick out the newest thing out on the market? However you choose here are some tips that we hope will help you when you go to purchase your next ball. First things first, we believe that the coverstock and coverstock preperation is the most important factor in ball reaction. That is pretty much accepted by everyone. The second factor in importance is the core, and lastly the layout.

That being said you should pick your ball based on the core, lay it out for for a reaction that complements the core and design and utilize the cover to “tweak” the reactions as in polishing for increased length and dulling for increased bite in oil.  This is particularly useful to match up to specific lane conditons.

Within normal layout parameters, the pin placement determines flare (hook potential) and length.  The position of the mass bias determines the strength and angularity of the back end reaction.

The only thing that a change in the cover will not affect is flare.  It can affect length, strength of backend reaction on certain parts of the lane (a polished ball reacts more violently to dry boards) and the APPEARANCE of angularity in the same way- a ball that reacts more violently to dry boards appears to have a more angular reaction, though it’s really a matter of perception rather than a change.

Hopefully this will help you with your next ball selection. If you have any questions stop in or send us an email. Good Luck, Bowl Good, and Get A Grip!!!
